Which episodes do you prefer more. Mama's Family NBC version or the syndicated episodes?
Although I liked both versions I would have to say my favorite episodes were the syndicated one. The show was lighter and more fun. Some of the NBC shows were a bit depressing.

I enjoyed both versions as well. I liked the NBC versions a little better though. I'm thinking they were the first shows with guest appearances by Harvey, Carol, and Betty i know Betty and Rue went on to Golden Girls.but, I've often wondered why Harvey and Carol didn't do more guest shots in the syndicated version.that's really why i liked the NBC version better because Harvey and Carol were in it. plus i really didn't care for Iola.but overall still a great show. i hope season 2 comes to DVD soon.

I liked the characters of Fran & Ellen but actually preferred the episodes without Carol Burnett in them. I always felt she was overacting a bit on the television show. I like her in the Mama's Family skits she had on her show though. But she just kind of changed the character when it was on the television show.

I agree with mamafanla that the syndicated ones were lighter and more fun, it seems Vicki was able to bring out her real self in the syndicated ones! Both versions were equally funny though!

I love BOTH !! But I have to say, I think the NBC versions are slightly better. They are more campy and dramatic and closer to the sketches. Plus the moments with Mama and Carol Burnette make this show an instant classic. I do like the syndicated version, but it became more plot based than character driven. By the end of the Syndicated show, it was more like Vicki Lawrence in a grey wig.

Ok, I need some clarification as to what is ment by the NBC vs. the Syndicated shows. Which ones where Syndicated?? Not sure I understand, but I'll try. Are the Syndicated ones the ones that were part of the newer series of episodes? I guess that would have been season, what, four or so? The one that starts with Fran's death on? Sorry, I guess I'm a bit.. confused (as I'm sure most of you can tell). Thanks in advance.

The NBC shows were the one with Thelma, Fran, Vint, Naomi, Buzz & Sonya. The syndicated shows began with the death of Fran and the introduction of Bubba. To me the characters of Thelma, Vint & Naomi were quite different in the NBC shows than they were in syndication.
Yes, the NBC episodes were more "true to life" but that's why I considered them more depressing. For example in the NBC shows Vint was a loser - just a man who never could make it big. He was unhappy with his lot in life and he was never going to get ahead. He wasn't necessarily stupid - but just didn't make good decisions. In the syndicated shows Vint was just a dimwit - REALLY a nitwit but basically happy with his life. He seemed to enjoy living with his mother.
